Consider your elopement options

You can either have a private elopement or a planned elopement with a few of your closest friends and family present. Some even have a private elopement and celebrate with friends and family afterwards.

Traditionally, officiants are present at elopements and weddings. However in the state of Colorado, this is not necessary. Some couples choose to self-solemnize without an officiant. For those who’d like an officiant, one can be found here, or you can choose to utilize a close friend! I personally have officiated a handful of weddings for friends and family, I choose to be ordained via this easy & quick website.

Marriage License Laws

Marriage license laws are different in every state. Luckily in Colorado no waiting period is necessary for getting married. The couple must complete an application for a marriage license, which is as simple as filling out the form in person at the courthouse, paying a $30 fee, and proving their identity. For Durango, CO and La Plata County, you can contact the court directly at (970) 382-6280

Choose your elopement location

Would you like to get married on a mountain top? Photos will undoubtedly be amazing, but getting there may be difficult. For some couples, this is attainable, know your capabilities and choose what type of experience you’d really like. For many, they prefer a jeep ride opposed to a hike. Colt Freeman Studio has 4x4 transportation options for a additional cost. Looking for specific locations, visit this post!

Format

You can still include your family and friends while eloping. Elopement comes in many different forms this day and age. Some couples choose to have an ultra private ceremony and others want their parents in attendance. Other couples that want an intimate ceremony but still want to celebrate with friends will do just that! They will get married in the mountains with just them two and come back in town to have a party with all their loved ones. Just remember, this day is about the two of you, make it special.

Elope!

Write your vows, go somewhere beautiful, and get married!

It can be difficult for people to understand why you don’t want a traditional wedding but remember, this day is about you and your partner. It helps to have a wonderful photographer (hint hint..) to document the experience so you can share it with friends and family if you wish.
